Dr. Muniz, holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2000), a master's degree in Demography from CEDEPLAR/UFMG (2002), and a master's and doctorate in Sociology/Demography from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (2008).

He has experience and interests in spatial data analysis, formal methods in demography, population projections, and aggregate and individual simulation methods. He has worked and published articles in Portuguese, English, and Spanish in the areas of sociology of race, migration, and the labor market.

His doctoral thesis investigated the reproduction of poverty and inequality in Brazil from a demographic perspective.

He is currently an Associate Professor in the Graduate Program in Sociology at UFMG. He was a visiting researcher at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver (2019).
